SPRAWL zero on Steam Deck: Playable Rating and Fixes

Valve’s rating: Playable

From Steam’s Deck compatibility report for app 3748520:

  • ✅ Default controller configuration is fully functional.
  • ✅ Default configuration is performant.
  • ⚠️ Controller glyphs do not match the Deck (you will see generic or Xbox-style prompts).
  • ⚠️ Some interface text is too small to read comfortably.
  • External controllers are not supported as the primary player.

“Playable” means it works but may need extra effort. The two flags are cosmetic and do not block play.

Performance reports

From the Steam forum during the demo:

  • “Runs beautifully on Steam Deck on High settings”, except that looking at the sky in some places dropped it from 60 to about 36 FPS.
  • Another player saw 60 FPS in “95% of game play, with all settings maxed out”, with drops from particle effects.
  • Small text was the most common complaint.

The full game uses the same custom Unreal Engine 5 setup with baked lighting, which is part of why it runs well on handheld hardware. The Switch 2 version shows the same: ThatGuyJakey Gaming posted handheld Switch 2 footage at launch.

Fix: fatal error on launch

A launch-day Steam bug report: the game showed a fatal error “every time after the splash screens”, on several Proton versions, although the demo had worked. A MAETH developer asked for details. The poster then found the cause:

Downgrading the Deck firmware from the current Preview build to the Beta build fixed it.

So if you are on the Preview channel: Settings → System → System Update Channel → Beta (or Stable), update, and relaunch.

Other Linux notes

A Proton user on desktop Linux reported hard freezes at the start of The Graveyard during the demo. Steam lists the game as Windows-only, so Linux play goes through Proton either way. See known issues and system requirements.
