SPRAWL zero Engine: A Custom UE5 Built for the PS2 Look
It is Unreal Engine 5, stripped down
A Steam forum thread asked “is this being developed on Unreal Engine 3? It looks like it.” MAETH developer Markie Music answered:
“Running on a custom UE5 with all of the bells and whistles ripped out. No nanite or lumen. Baked lighting. Temporal image reconstruction removed (TAA) and replaced with MSAA. Helps give the game a super clean image quality like how Source games looked like back in the day. Runs really well too!”
PCGamingWiki lists Unreal Engine 5 as well.
Why it looks like 2004
In the Quad Damage interview, director Carlos Lizarraga went further: “We’re not using what Unreal Engine ships with. We have tuned it… We’ve built our own sort of base shaders” and they “don’t use any sort of … normal maps, for example, or PBR shading.” In IGN’s showcase he set the target: fidelity that should “feel right at home alongside sixth generation console classics. The stuff you grew up playing on a PS2, an Xbox, or a GameCube.”
Reviewers read the low-resolution textures and chunky geometry as deliberate homage rather than technical limits. The artbook’s description credits “technical limitations, Y2K nostalgia, and classic sci-fi influences” with shaping every silhouette.
What it means for you
- Low requirements. 4 GB of storage and a GTX 1050 Ti at minimum, although 16 GB of RAM is still required. See system requirements.
- Sharp image without TAA blur. MSAA or FXAA only. There is no DLSS or FSR yet, and some players have asked for them.
- Particles are the weak spot. Frame drops from dust and effects are the most common performance report.
- UEVR. VR injectors do not work: players report UEVR will not inject and depth capture fails.
The inspirations
Every mechanic, the director says, “has lineage in a mechanic from a 2000’s game”: health drops from Metroid Prime, bullet-time from F.E.A.R., gravity manipulation from Half-Life 2, and the squad and weapon variety of Halo. The one-gun limit came from testing: an early build with two weapon slots “made the game worse”. More in the weapons page and SPRAWL vs SPRAWL zero.
